Prof. Supriya Garikipati is a Professor in Sustainable Development and serves as the Director of the Centre for Sustainable Development, University College Dublin. She completed her doctorate in development economics from the University of Cambridge (UK), where she was the recipient of the Nehru-Cambridge and British Chevening Scholarships. Prof. Garikipati has held academic positions at the University of Cambridge (UK), the Open University (UK), and the University of Liverpool (UK).
With over two decades of experience in academic and applied development research, Prof. Garikipati's work has been supported by prestigious institutions such as the British Academy, DFID, Nuffield Foundation, Newton Trust, and UKRI. Her findings are regularly published in leading journals and featured in international media.
Prof. Garikipati's expertise lies in the political economy of growth and development, with a particular focus on gender and public policy. Her research encompasses development finance, social exclusion, female labour force participation, reproductive health, intra-household bargaining, and gender differences and discrimination. Her research focus predominantly revolves around India and sub-Saharan Africa.
In addition to her academic pursuits, Prof. Garikipati's commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion is evidenced by her involvement in and contributions to Athena SWAN initiatives at various institutions, reflecting her ongoing dedication to these crucial aspects in academia and beyond.
Prof. Garikipati has also served in advisory capacities to various national governments and international agencies, such as India’s National Rural Bank (NABARD), Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty, Department of Rural Development (SERP, DRD), Department for Water and Sanitation, WaterAid, and UNICEF. Her dedication to research and impact was recognised through the Wrenbury Award in 2001 and the Outstanding Contribution to Research Impact Award in 2014.
