This workshop will be held in the Outer Hebrides and will examine the role of the indigenous culture and languages in supporting vibrant communities. It will particularly focus on whether there is a future for Gaelic and the Northern Isles dialects. However, given the range of expertise shown by the participants, who are involved in language research, heritage and creative practice, it will also explore the intersection of language, culture, heritage and the creative industries. How can they support and bolster each other in future? How do we avoid the worst-case scenario – language death, population decline etc – and achieve a high-aspiration future – continued community language use and vibrant communities engaging with their heritage in creative ways.
