BIO

Full Professor of Socioliinguistics. PhD/Doctorat-ès-Lettres, Linguistics, Mention Très Bien. Université de Provence Areas of research: sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, applied linguistics, sociolinguistic competence. Government of Ireland Senior Research Fellowship Project (2009-2010): "Language, identity and interculturalism in Ireland", funded by IRCHSS. The project used sociolinguistic models to provide a detailed analysis of how both migrant and "traditional" Irish negotiate and construct identities through language, with implications for how Irish society manages social and linguistic diversity. Joint co-ordinator of MA in Applied Linguistics Former President of EUROSLA (the European Association for Second Language Research). Former President of the Association for French Language Studies. Previously member executive committee of the Association of University Professors and Heads of French (UK and Ireland). Member of ICoSLA (International Commission on Second Language Acquisition). Visiting professorships at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Ottawa. Two Fulbright Senior Research Awards (University of Pennsylvania). Member of the Governing Authority, University College Dublin (1999-2004).
