Dr. Durrer holds degrees in Art History (BA, MA) and Sociology (PhD). Her research traverses the areas of arts management and cultural policy practice and stresses their interconnection, particularly in relation to the representation of people’s identities, traditions, experiences and voices in the practices and policies of international, national and local cultural institutions, government and quasi-state bodies. She is contributor and co-editor of two international volumes: The Routledge Handbook of Global Cultural Policy (2018) and Managing Culture: Reflecting on Exchange in Global Times (2020). She is committed to publicly-engaged research, having co-founded Brokering Intercultural Exchange, an international research network on arts and cultural management, and the all-island research network, Cultural Policy Observatory Ireland, both of which stress the importance of knowledge exchange between practitioners and researchers. Engagement with the arts and cultural sector is integral to her work, which has received funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK) in addition to sector-based funding. With publications in a number of books and academic journals and a commitment to publicly-engaged research, her work has been significant in raising the profile of Irish cultural policy studies. In addition to her academic expertise, Dr Durrer previously served as Youth Arts Co-ordinator for South Dublin County Council, as well as previous roles in community / arts management in Britain, the U.S., and China. She joined UCD from Queen’s University Belfast where she served as Senior Lecturer in Arts Management and Cultural Policy.
