Wenxin Wang is a professor in wound healing and a principal investigator of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI). He currently works at the Charles Institute of Dermatology, University College Dublin. His scientific interests are in the areas of wound healing, tissue regeneration, gene therapy, and development of new treatments for neural degenerative disease. He employs a variety of polymers for a wide range of applications, including smart polymers, dendritic polymers, new colloidal polymer particles, organic and inorganic hybrid nanomaterials, biodegradable polymers, fluorinated polymers and silicone polymers. These applications predominantly lie within the areas of tissue engineering, drug delivery, and gene therapy. Professor Wang’s research has attracted over 9.5 million Euros from a variety of funding bodies, such as the European Commission, SFI, HRB, IRC, EI, DEBRA Charity and Industry collaborators. He has been invited 88 times as a keynote or invited speaker at international conferences and universities. He also has hosted 24 conferences as a member of the advisory board, organizer, chair or convenor around the world. Professor Wang has fully engaged with the public and media to promote his research findings (26 times in TV Documentary, Videos and Newspapers). His breakthrough research on controlled/living multivinyl monomer polymerizations and their biomedical applications, in particular on the treatment of EB have been highlighted by Irish Times, Chemistry World, Science Daily and Chemical Processing and RTE TV Documentary. Professor Wang has founded two companies: Vornia Ltd. and Blafar Ltd. and he took on the roles of CSO for both of these institutions. Currently, he is focusing on the operation of Blafar Ltd. since Vornia Ltd. has been purchased by Ashland Inc. Professor Wang has won the prestigious “SFI Young Scientist Prize in Regenerative Medicine” at TERMIS-EU Conference 2010 and the SFI Principle Investigator Award in 2011. He has also been selected 22 times as an expert reviewer and panel member by a variety of research councils and funding bodies, such as the Belgium Scientific Review Board at the Scientific Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) Commission, European Commission FP7 and Horizon2020 - Marie Curie Fellowship, Canada Ontario Research Fund, Austrian Science Fund, the Portuguese Foundation for Science FCT mission, Medical Research Council (UK) and EPSRC (UK), etc.
