BIO

Dr Xue Ning is a Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Bioengineering for the Circular Bioeconomy at the School of Biosystems and Food Engineering, University College Dublin (UCD). With an academic background in Civil and Environmental Engineering, her research lies at the interface of environmental engineering, biotechnology and bioelectrochemical engineering, with a particular focus on developing sustainable technologies for organic waste and wastewater treatment, carbon valorisation, resource recovery and renewable bioenergy production.

Dr Ning is developing an independent research group in Bioelectrochemical Engineering. She leads and contributes to several nationally and internationally funded research projects (over €1.3 M), including projects supported by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and the MIT Global Seed Fund, and collaborates extensively with academic and industry partners in Ireland and internationally. Her research combines fundamental understanding with technology development and environmental application, with particular emphasis on translating emerging technologies towards practical solutions for the circular bioeconomy and industrial decarbonisation.

Alongside her research, Dr Ning contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in sustainable energy, environmental systems and engineering design, and supervises research students across environmental and sustainable energy engineering. Beyond her research and teaching, Dr Ning plays an active role in professional leadership and academic service. She currently serves as Chair of the Agriculture and Food Division of Engineers Ireland (2026–) and as a Multidisciplinary Committee Member in Engineering and Computer Science at the Royal Irish Academy (2026–2030). She previously chaired the MaREI Symposium 2024, bringing together approximately 200 researchers from 13 Irish institutions. She also contributes to national and international research evaluation as proposal reviewer and as peer reviewer for leading international journals, including Nature Communications, Bioresource Technology, Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering, Journal of Environmental Management, Waste Management, Energy, etc.
