RESEARCH INTERESTS

We tend to think of organisations as rational places in which decisions are made on the basis of external, observable data. Organisations are of course partly that but they are also emotional, political and messy places prone to confusion and disruption. My broad area of research is emotion in organisations and within that how psychodynamic theories and approaches assist in looking 'under the surface' of organisational life.

There are three strands to my research:

Social Emotions: How emotions like disappointment affect the state of social relations/hold organisations together.

Teaching Emotions: How emotions are brought into the classroom and how they can be worked with in the service of learning. I have a particular interest in anxiety in the classroom and how it can enhance and inhibit learning.

Researching Emotions: How to develop qualitative research methods that can study emotions effectively.
