RESEARCH INTERESTS
My main research interest are vectors and vector-borne diseases. I currently coordinate a project funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, which aims to establish a national network of expertise in arthropod vectors and vector-borne diseases (www.ucd.ie/netvecireland) and determine the current distribution of biting midges and mosquitoes in Ireland. As working group leader of a project funded under the EU4 Health programme (OH- ALLIES) I am also investigating the epidemiology and genetic relationship of tick-borne encephalitis virus and Louping Ill Virus. A related project looks into the clinical importance of tick-borne fever in the national flock. Between 2017 and 2023 I served as national representative on VectorNet, a European network for sharing data on the geographic distribution of arthropod vectors, transmitting human and animal disease agents. I am a member of COST Action CA21170 PRAGMATICK (Anticipation and mitigation of tick-borne disease risk applying the DAMA protocol) and have a keen interest in promoting the environmental sustainability of teaching and research.
