BIO
I am a specialist in European and Mediterranean prehistory, with a particular focus on the 2nd to early 1st millennia BC. I have conducted fieldwork and museum-based projects across Europe, including Albania, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Montenegro, Republic of North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and the United Kingdom. This has been supported by Irish Research Council fellowships, two Marie Sklodowska Curie fellowships and an ERC Consolidator Grant, amongst other sources.
I joined UCD in 2018 as Associate Professor in the UCD School of Archaeology. I teach on a variety of topics, including Mediterranean Archaeology, Bronze and Iron Age Europe, Material Culture studies, Collapse and Resilience in Ancient Societies, Experimental Archaeology, Fieldwork Methods and Practice, Archaeological Science.
I am the General Editor of the European Journal of Archaeology and am on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Archaeological Research and Ziridava - Studia Archaeologica.
From 2018 to 2024 I led the ERC funded "The Fall of 1200 BC" project (GA #772753), with publication initiatives ongoing. This work explores crisis-driven societal changes in southeast Europe and the eastern Mediterranean at the end of the Bronze Age. This includes research into migration and mobility, conflict and warfare, craft responses, and climate change in the 14th to 11th centuries BC.
I have published over 65 academic papers in leading discipline-specific and interdisciplinary journals. I regularly participate in the European Association of Archaeologists and the Archaeological Institute of America annual meetings. I am Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and a Member of the Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland.
I am regularly interviewed as a consultant by international media, including Science, New Scientist, Smithsonian and National Geographic magazines as well as leading international news outlets. In turn my research has had feature pieces in these and a wide range of other media, including blogs, podcasts, documentary videos and more. I passionately believe in sharing my research and that of my team widely, promoting engagement well beyond academic audiences to ensure our results are impactful in civic society.
