BIO

Dr Bellasio is the head of the Laboratory of Theoretical and Applied Crop Ecophysiology. His research group focuses on the ecophysiology of photosynthesis and seeks to understand how plants function by manipulating environmental conditions such as light intensity, temperature, and CO2 concentration, and by observing their short, medium, and long-term responses.

He holds a University Professor Qualification for the roles of Associate Professor of Plant Physiology (05/A2) and Associate Professor of Agricultural Chemistry, Agricultural Genetics, and Pedology (07/E1), awarded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research, as well as professional licensure as a Chartered Agronomist and Forester.

Before joining UCD, Dr Bellasio was awarded an individual Marie Curie Global Fellowship in 2017 to research in the Laboratories of Graham Farquhar FRS, and Jaume Flexas at the Australian National University and the University of Balearic Islands, respectively. He studied the effect of loss of turgor pressure on assimilation. His postdoctoral research was conducted at Sheffield with David Beerling FRS, in the context of an ERC advanced grant, where he studied the physiological responses of trees and grasses to CO2 and drought, which likely led to the transition between forests and savannas. He received his PhD from Cambridge under the supervision of Howard Griffiths, where he investigated the mechanism by which C4 plants exposed to light of reduced intensity and changing spectral quality mitigate energy losses. He holds a combined BS+MS degree in Agricultural Sciences and Technology with a major in crop production, a specialty in crop physiology and biochemistry, and a research project on heavy metal stress responses in maize roots.

Dr Bellasio has authored 27 articles in leading journals, and has given keynote speeches at two major conferences in the field. He has also given seven talks and four public seminars. He serves as an Associate Editor of Plants and Frontiers in Plant Sciences, and holds a Certificate in Technology Entrepreneurship, awarded by Santa Clara University as part of a Fulbright Best exchange program.

The laboratory is currently offering a 4-year PhD scholarship funded by SFI-IRC within the Photosynthetic Metabolite Exchange (PHOMEX) project.
