RESEARCH INTERESTS
Professor Naughton has completed a number of clinically applied and impactful research projects mainly in the areas of older persons care, gerontological workforce and advanced nurse practice. She has undertaken research in Ireland and the UK and received competitive funding from the Irish Health Research Board, Irish Cancer Society, Health Service Executive, Burdette Trust (UK), Nursing and Midwifery Council of England and Wales, Health Education England.
Professor Naughton is particularly interested in translation of evidence into clinical practice and intervention development to address real world clinical issues in older persons care using randomised and pragmatic trial design, and quality improvement methodology. Recent projects include: implementation of a frailty care bundle in acute care and rehabilitation settings, improving care experience of people with dementia and reducing psychotic prescribing in acute care, improving delirium screening and management in the emergency department, gerontological workforce (capability, capacity and safe staffing models), improving dementia communication skills in undergraduate nurses, exploring older patients experience of community outreach services, sexual safety in congregated settings and elder abuse. Professor Naughton has also completed research in the area of advance practice (medicinal prescribing and prescribing of ionising radiation), cancer service evaluation, and ethical frameworks for clinical audit and quality improvement.
