RESEARCH INTERESTS

I research the history and culture of Late Antique and Early Medieval Ireland. I use an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on both textual and material evidence. I have published on a wide range of topics in peer-reviewed journals and collections of essays. I am currently working on two major projects. One is an examination of the formative role played by the Roman frontier in Late Antique Ireland (and the Roman Atlantic West more generally) while the other is an analysis of the cults of the Irish saints, especially through their geographical, gendered and chronological dimensions.

Previews and samples of my published academic research can be found on my academia page (https://ucd.academia.edu/ElvaJohnston).
