BIO
Dr John Gilmore is Subject Head for Adult General Nursing and an Assistant Professor in Nursing at University College Dublin. He joined UCD in 2020, having previously worked as a Senior Lecturer in Nursing at Canterbury Christ Church University in the UK. He is a member of UCD IRIS, the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research, Education and Innovation in Health Systems.
John has a diverse clinical background, having worked across a range of healthcare settings in Ireland and the UK, including intensive care, intellectual disability, respiratory high dependency, emergency care, stroke rehabilitation and sexual health. He holds a BSc in General Nursing from the University of Galway, a Graduate Diploma in Critical Care Nursing (ICU) from UCD, and a Master of Social Science in Rights and Social Policy from Maynooth University. In 2021, he completed his PhD with examiner's commendation at Canterbury Christ Church University, exploring the experiences of Irish gay men discussing sexuality with healthcare practitioners.
John's academic work is grounded in an understanding of nursing as praxis for social justice. His teaching and research draw on theories of social justice, inclusion and intersectionality, with a particular focus on inclusion health and the health and healthcare experiences of sexual and gender minority populations. He is Research Lead for Nurses and Midwives for Inclusion Health and Nursing Lead for the All-Ireland Inclusion Health Forum. He leads and collaborates on a range of research projects in inclusion health and sexual and gender minority healthcare and has presented his work on challenging exclusion and oppression within healthcare at national and international forums.
In 2022, John was awarded a Fulbright-HRB HealthImpact Scholar Award, through which he undertook visiting scholarship at the University of California, San Francisco and Columbia University in New York. His work in the United States focused on healthcare models for sexual and gender minority populations and research examining LGBTQI+ experiences of primary healthcare. He was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Huddersfield from 2022 to 2025 and is currently an Adjunct Research Fellow at Western Sydney University.
John is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Nursing Practice and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Advanced Nursing, the International Journal of STD & AIDS and Global LGBTQ+ Health.
John has held a range of leadership and service roles within UCD. He served for several years as Co-Chair of UCD's LGBTQI+ Staff Network and is a member of university committees and initiatives concerned with equality, diversity and inclusion, dignity and respect, and the prevention of sexual harassment and violence. As a UCD University for All Faculty Partner, he has also supported the development and delivery of training in Universal Design for Learning.
In 2023, John was appointed by the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science to the Board of Léargas, Ireland's national agency for Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps, and currently serves as Chair of the Board (reappointed in 2026).
John is also a Fulbright Campus Ambassador at UCD and welcomes contact from prospective Fulbright scholars considering UCD as a host institution, as well as UCD faculty and students interested in applying for Fulbright awards.
