TEACHING ACTIVITIES
John is deeply committed to fostering inclusive and impactful teaching and learning environments, with a particular focus on social justice, inclusion and person-centred healthcare. He teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programmes, supporting students to develop the knowledge, critical thinking and professional capabilities needed to challenge inequity and contribute positively to healthcare practice and systems.
His approach to education draws on a range of pedagogical methods to create engaging, participatory and inclusive learning experiences. Across his teaching, John encourages students to critically examine established practices and assumptions, connect theory with clinical practice, and consider the wider social and structural factors that shape health and healthcare.
John is a strong advocate for Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and incorporates UDL principles throughout his teaching and curriculum development. As a UCD University for All Faculty Partner, he has facilitated UDL training locally and nationally, supporting educators to develop more accessible and inclusive approaches to teaching, learning and assessment.
His contribution to teaching and learning has been recognised through a UCD College of Health and Agricultural Sciences Teaching and Learning Award in 2024 and a UCD Values in Action Award in 2026.
