RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr McCabe's principal research interests include secondary prevention after stroke, vascular inflammation in stroke, risk prediction using PET imaging of carotid artery disease, and stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation. He has been awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by University College Dublin (UCD) during his time as a research fellow with the Stroke Clinical Trials Network Ireland (SCTNI) from 2018-2022.
Dr McCabe's principal research interests include atherosclerosis, vascular inflammation, and stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation. He helped to establish the Blood Inflammatory markers in Stroke Collaboration (BISC) which leveraged pooled individual participant data from over 10,000 patients and 12 studies and demonstrated independent associations between C-reactive protein (CRP) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) with vascular recurrence after stroke. He is involved in several ongoing studies that seek to establish the role of inflammatory marker measurement in routine clinical practice and to identify patients who may benefit from novel anti-inflammatory therapies for secondary prevention after stroke.
He has also published long-term follow-up data demonstrating the role of carotid PET imaging in identifying patients with carotid atherosclerosis at high risk of recurrent stroke.
Recent work has also focused on the epidemiology of atrial fibrillation (AF)-related stroke, prognosis in AF-related stroke, and identifying new targets for secondary prevention in these patients. He is a co-founder of BIOSTROKE (https://www.biostroke.de/biostroke) - an emerging consortium of international stroke biomarker researchers- with the broad aim of advancing diagnosis, prognosis and tailored treatment in stroke. He is a member of both the European Stroke Organisation Guideline Board and Heart & Brain Council.
