BIO
Joe Byrne is Lecturer in Bioinorganic Chemistry at UCD. His group's research is at the interface between carbohydrate chemistry and coordination chemistry, in particular focussing on the applications of carbohydrate-functionalised metal complexes as diagnostic and therapeutic tools against bacteria and other pathogens. Before joining UCD in 2023, Joe was a Science Foundation Ireland Starting Investigator (SIRG) in University of Galway, where he began an independent research programme. His postdoctoral work in Universität Bern (Prof. Martin Albrecht's lab) was supported by a Marie Skłodowska–Curie Individual Fellowship, and an RSC Mobility Grant (to travel to University of Nottingham). Prior to this, he completed his PhD under the supervision of Prof Thorri Gunnlaugsson in Trinity College Dublin in supramolecular chemistry, with a focus on lanthanide complexes.
Joe is a Fellow of the Conway Institute and a member of UCD One Health. He also contributes to professional organisations in his field as Registrar of the Insitute of Chemistry of Ireland, Secretary of the Royal Society of Chemistry Carbohydrate Interest Group, Secretary of the Irish Biological Inorganic Chemistry Society and commitee member of the RSC Republic of Ireland Local Section.
