TEACHING ACTIVITIES
Joe Byrne is Lecturer in Bioinorganic Chemistry. His teaching topics include the chemistry of metals and their interfaces with medicine and biology. He teaches to diverse student groups across science, medicine and engineering programmes. He supervises undergraduate research projects, including hosting vistors from US, Europe and China. He acts as a mentor through tutoring groups for Introduction to Scientific Enquiry, and acting as an Academic Advisor to Stage 3 students.
His teaching responsibilities also take an active interest in work-integrated learning and career readiness. He is module coordinator of the College of Science Professional Placements module, acting as contact point for Stage 3 chemistry students on work placements, and is a member of the College of Science Academic-Careers Network Liaison Committee.
At postgraduate level, he supervises research students on a range of projects (externally- and internally-funded), sits on research supervision panels and examination committees for students in the School of Chemistry and School of Medicine. He coordinates transversal skills-based modules for postgraduates in technical writing/scientific communication, project management and mentoring skills.
He is also a proponent of applying Universal Design for Learning and career-readiness, including facilitating training colleagues in UDL and scholarship of teaching and learning in this area.
