RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr. Róisín Kennedy's research focuses on the critical reception and display of modern art in Ireland, on the role and function of art writing post 1880, on the position of women as artists and subjects in modernist art, and on the role of censorship and ideology in the production and patronage of modern art.
An area of research focus is international networks and the collecting and display of modern art in Ireland 1908-55, and modern Irish art abroad in the same period. Her essay on the participation of Irish artists in the Armory Show in New York in 1913 is published in eds. Cynthia Fowler and Paula Murphy Art History at the Crossroads of Ireland and the United States, Routledge 2022 . She was the recipient of the Ernie O'Malley Family Residential Research grant which facilitated research into the Ernie O'Malley papers at New York University library in May 2023.
Assoc Prof Kennedy is currently working on the legacy and contribution of Michael Scott to the arts and culture of Modern Ireland. She organised a symposium on this theme which was held on 29 November 2024 in the Irish Architectural Archive. An edited anthology of the papers plus additional scholarship, edited by Róisín Kennedy, will be published in a forthcoming book by Irish Academic Press in 2027-28.
Assoc Prof Kennedy is actively writing and researching the career and practice of Jack B. Yeats (1870-1957). Her essay, 'Theatre and Performance in the work of Jack B.
