Michael Scott (1905-1989) was one of Ireland’s leading modernist architects, designing such iconic buildings as his home Geragh in Sandycove, the ‘Shamrock Pavilion’ at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, Donnybrook Bus Garage and Busáras. He later founded the hugely successful architectural practice, Scott, Tallon, Walker, bringing together two of Ireland’s most outstanding exponents of international modernism, as well as mentoring numerous architects, engineers, designers, and artists, over the decades. Witty and charismatic with an ability to network with the political elite, Scott succeeded in securing many of the most important architectural commissions of his time. He was also involved in most of the major cultural bodies of the 20th century and therefore one of the most influential ‘Movers and Shapers’ of modern Irish culture. A controversial figure, maligned by some for his elitist attitudes, Scott’s contribution to the shaping of Modern Ireland has never been fully assessed. This symposium aims to uncover previously overlooked or under researched aspects of his involvement in these various fields. Held under the auspices of UCD School of Art History and Cultural Policy, the symposium examines the role and legacy of Michael Scott in the arts and culture of modern Ireland. It asks what role Scott played in the planning of arts and cultural initiatives and projects in Ireland from 1925, what networks did he operate in, and what were the broader objectives and achievements of these endeavours?

examines the role of visual culture in the aftermath of political independence of the Irish Free State in 1922 up to outbreak of World War II in 1939. It seeks to make comparisons and connections between the visual culture of the new Irish state and those of other European and international nations and regions in the interwar period. It asks what role visual culture played in constructing new identities and in communicating national values and shared ideals to a diverse population and to the wider world.

    Workshop
    19 Oct 2019
Can visual materials be historical references? Why should one use images in historical analysis, writings and presentations? What do they say that text does not? How might they, should they or can they be interpreted? This event, to be held at the RSAI in Dublin, will be a three-hour workshop comprising two parts. The first being a short seminar, which will introduce the attendees to the concept of using visual materials as historical references; visual methodologies; compositions of images; and an introduction to conventions. This will be followed by a hands-on workshop where researchers can engage with their own research images and materials through various methodological perspectives. The event will be facilitated by four art and visual culture historians from IADT and UCD. It is aimed at professional historians with limited or no experience using visual materials in their research, but we equally welcome more experienced researchers who are willing to further develop their skills and share their insights.
