RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research interests focus on sustainable water management, including:
Evaluating water demand and efficiency at the building scale including real-time monitoring, introduction of new technologies and promoting behavioural change.
Reducing the energy used for wastewater treatment, and recovering energy, chemicals, nutrients and other valuable products from wastewater.
Using sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), nature based solutions (NBS) or green infrastructure (GI) to capture and control the release of rainwater run-off to enable local flood resilience.
Exploring the export of nutrients and contaminants in runoff to water bodies in urban and rural environments.
Scale-up and practical evaluation of novel water and wastewater treatment technologies.

Ongoing PhD research projects include:
- ‘Evaluating a new sustainable drainage material for its potential to mitigate road runoff’, funded by UCD in partnership with SEL Environmental Ltd
- 'Understanding and optimising novel wastewater treatment design using computational fluid dynamics (CFD)', funded through the Chinese Scholarship Council, and co-supervised by Dr Jennifer Keenhan.
- 'Comparative Analysis of the Possibility of Alum Sludge Utilization in Conventional Wastewater Treatment Plants', funded through the Chinese Scholarship Council, co-supervised with Prof. Yaqian Zhao, Xi'an University of Technology.
- 'Decentralised Resource and Energy Efficiency: Source Separation' funded through the Science Foundation Ireland Partnership Programme: "NexSys" and co-supervised by Dr Kaan Dereli in UCD School of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering
- 'Decentralised Resource and Energy Efficiency: Water Reuse' funded through the Science Foundation Ireland Partnership Programme: "NexSys" and co-supervised by Dr Kaan Dereli in UCD School of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering
- 'Development of approaches to enable demand response in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs)' funded through the Science Foundation Ireland Partnership Programme: "NexSys" and co-supervised with Dr Kaan Dereli in UCD School of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering
