BIO
Seán is an Associate Professor in the MIS subject area within the School of Business. He is Director of the UCD Centre for Business Analytics and previously Director of the UCD Smurfit Graduate School of Business MSc in Business Analytics. He has published extensively in mathematics, operational research and management science, analytics and natural computing. He has supervised to completion three PhD students and over 100 MSc Business Analytics students. He has supervised ten post-doctoral researchers on funded projects. He worked as an IT and management consultant for five years before returning to academia.
He has served on the Editorial Boards of the European Journal of Operations Research (EJOR) and the Springer Journal of Metaheuristics, as well as being guest editor on the Special Issue of EJOR covering Proceedings of the EURO 2019 conference. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence (EAAI) Journal (Elsevier, IFAC). He reviews for these and numerous other journals. From 2009 to 2023 he served as Irish Representative on the EURO Council (the governing body of EURO, the Association of European Operational Research Societies), and as Irish Representative on IFORS (International Federation of Operational Research Societies). He is VP (International) of the Analytics Society of Ireland. He is a member of EURO, and previously INFORMS and the ACM Special Interest Group on Evolutionary Computation. Since January 2024 he has served as Vice-President 1 of EURO with responsibility for conferences.
Seán was Chair of the Organising Committee for the EURO 2019 30th European Conference on Operational Research, which was held on the UCD Belfield campus from 22–26 June 2019. This was won after a competitive bidding process. Approximately 2500 delegates attended.
International collaborators include Professor Terry Harrison of Penn State University (whom Seán visited on sabbatical in 2015), Past President of INFORMS, on Supply Chain Management; Professors Angel Juan of the Open University of Catalonia, Barcelona and Jesica de Armas of Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, on metaheuristic approaches to arc routing problems; and Professors Martine Labbé and Bernard Fortz of Université Libre, Bruxelles, on telecommunications network design.
Seán has written or co-written funding proposals leading to a total funding won of over €7million from both public and corporate funding sources, and has been personally responsible for managing funding of over €1 million in money and equipment. In particular, he cowrote the successful funding proposal for the EC Horizon 2020-funded VALUMICS research project on food value chains, led Work Package 7 and served on the VALUMICS Executive Board. Most recently, he is co-PI on the Science Foundation Ireland-funded ReAMPS project.
He was the academic member of the Steering Group for the study 'Assessing the Demand for Big Data / Analytics skills in Ireland 2013–2020', undertaken by the Irish Government's Forfás Expert Group on Future Skills Needs. He continues to advise the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation and other government bodies.
