Assoc ProfessorSharae Deckard

Dr. Sharae Deckard is Associate Professor in World Literature at UCD. Her research interests intersect environmental criticism and world-systems approaches to world literature, ecology, and culture. With Upamanyu Pablo Mukherjee, she is the academic series editor of Palgrave's New Comparisons in World Literature series, and she is also on the Editorial Board for Liverpool Studies in Literature and the Environment. Sharae previously served as the Director of the UCD Environmental Humanities research strand, and is currently a member of the "Environmental Humanities" Steering Group for the Irish Humanities Alliance.

Her books include a monograph, Paradise Discourse, Imperialism and Globalization (Routledge 2010) and Combined and Uneven Development: Towards a New Theory of World-Literature (co-authored with the Warwick Research Collective, Liverpool UP 2015; translated into Portuguese for Unicamp, 2020). With Rashmi Varma, she is co-editor of Marxism, Postcolonial Theory, and the Future of Critique: Critical Engagements with Benita Parry (Routledge 2018), and with Stephen Shapiro, she is editor of World Literature, Neoliberalism and the Culture of Discontent (Palgrave 2019), winner of the BACLS Edited Collection Prize.  Her co-authored book, Tracking Capital: World-Systems, World-Ecology, World-Culture, co-written with Michael Niblett and Stephen Shapiro, was published by SUNY Press in March 2024. Her latest book is The Routledge Companion to World-Literature and the Environment, co-edited with Treasa De Loughry, Kerstin Oloff and Claire Westall, published July 2026.

Sharae has edited six special issues of journals, including: 'Social Reproduction Feminism and World-Culture,' co-edited with Kate Houlden, Feminist Theory 25.2 (2024); “Food, Energy, Climate: Irish Culture and World-Ecology,” co-edited with Lucy Collins, Irish University Review 49.1 (2019); “Experimental Writing and the Globalizing World,” co-edited with Wendy Knepper, ARIEL: A Review of International English Literature 47.1-2 (2016); “Ireland in the World-System,” co-edited with Aidan Beatty and Maurice Coakley, Journal of World-Systems Research 22.1 (March 2016); “Global and Postcolonial Ecologies,” including “Editorial Introduction: Reading the World-Ecology,” Green Letters: Studies in Ecocriticism 16 (August 2012); and “Postcolonial Studies and World Literature,” co-edited with James Graham and Michael Niblett, Journal of Postcolonial Writing 48.5 (Oct 2012). 

She has also published multiple articles on postcolonial ecocriticism and world-ecology in journals including New Formations, Interventions, JPW, MLQ, CLC, Atlantic Studies, Green Letters, Moving Worlds, and various edited collections, companions and handbooks. She is currently editing a Routledge Companion to Literature and Environment. She has a particular interest in questions of genre, including peripheral modernism, 'critical irrealism,' ecogothic and ecohorror, weird fiction, and postcolonial sf and cli-fi.
