BIO

Dr Simone Marcone is an Assistant Professor in Cell Biology at the School of Biology and Environmental Science, University College Dublin (UCD). His research focuses on translational medicine of chronic inflammatory diseases, including cardiovascular diseases and cancer. His highly interdisciplinary investigations lies at the interface between cell & molecular biology, pharmacology, translational research, and drug development. His work contributed to the discovery and development of novel bioactive molecules, nanotherapeutics, and in vitro diagnostics. His studies has also demonstrated the importance of inflammation and metabolic reprogramming in cancer development, progression, and in regulating response to therapy. Simone`s current research goal is to develop novel therapeutics to prevent cancer development in patients with pre-cancerous lesion of the oesophagus (Barrett`s oesophagus), and new diagnostic tools to stratify Barretts` patients based on their risk of disease progression. Simone studied in ‘La Sapienza’ University in Rome (Italy) where he graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 2007, and a PhD in Molecular Medicine in 2013 from UCD. His postgraduate degree was followed by a 10-yrs postdoctoral and senior research fellow work UCD, Systems Biology Ireland, OncoMark, and Trinity College Dublin. In addition to his research, Dr Marcone is a member of the Council of the Irish Association Cancer Research working on Patient and Public Involvement in research and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion activities.
