RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research interests embrace the literature and culture of German-speaking countries in the 18th and 19th centuries, word and music studies, German-language opera as transformational and translational genre, adaptation studies, and recent and contemporary Swiss-German literature, currently the writings of Basel-born Gabrielle Alioth (b. 1955). Identity, belonging, and the critical relationship to her Swiss homeland are themes in her works, and Ireland is often the setting. Her work has transnational relevance for contemporary Ireland and Europe. My interest in opera and Swiss-German literature was sparked during a formative postgraduate Swiss-Government scholarship at the University of Bern.
