RESEARCH INTERESTS

Susi's research interests revolve around the shaping of complex regulated markets, especially in medical and pharmaceutical markets. Currently, her main concern is in envisaging the pharmaceutical commons as an alternative pharmaceutical innovation system. She is also involved in research projects on the psychedelics market, breastfeeding activism, healthcare AI, market resilience in personal protective equipment, and health equity for migrants and homeless people. Previously, her research focus was a European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator funded project entitled "Misfires and Market Innovation: Toward a Collaborative Turn in Organising Markets" (MISFIRES) (2018-2024). Through a research team of six, the MISFIRES project refocused the issues of market failures and market design from economic principles of supply and demand towards collaboration and participation. It investigated problems and concerns in biomedical markets including HIV/AIDS, diabetes Hepatitis C, and genomics, such as overpricing, lack of transparency, limited access to medicines and data privacy issues. MIFIRES established how market failures in biomedical markets can be identified and diagnosed and how government bodies, medical and pharmaceutical industries, patient groups and other civil society actors can work together to solve these market failures. The project guided new academic and policy thinking by establishing what research can do to make markets more inclusive and to open them up to the concerns of those who are let down by them.

Prior to MISFIRES, during a Marie Sklodowska Curie Global Fellowship, Susi investigated market shaping in digital health markets in the US, France and Ireland. Between 2013 and 2017 she was a Principal Investigator in the Enterprise Ireland ARCH Technology Centre for Connected Health, where she directed a research team researching organisational and market change in digital health markets. She was also involved in CHESS, a Horizon 2020 Marie Sklodowska Curie Initial Training Network in the area of connected health.

New projects of interest would be in the areas of digital markets and pharmaceutical/health care markets, including issues around market innovation, intellectual property/patent management, and market-based social movements.
