Assoc ProfessorTadhg Ó'Cróinín

Dr Ó Cróinín’s research group focuses primarily on the virulence of bacterial pathogens with
a particular focus on those that infect the gastrointestinal tract such as Salmonella enterica
and Campylobacter jejuni and those that cause infections associated with medical devices
such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Recent projects have focused
on the role played by DNA supercoiling in the regulation of biofilm formation and how this
is associated with Antibiotic resistance in Campylobacter jejuni as well as analysing the
formation of biofilms by Staphylococcus aureus on medical devices coated in different biopolymers. The
laboratory uses a variety of in vitro and in vivo models of infection to investigate how
microorganisms alter phenotype to cause disease or affect antibiotic resistance. To date Dr Ó
Cróinín has mentored 7 PhD students to completion as well as 3  research Masters students.
