RESEARCH INTERESTS

I am interested in the capacities of cultural activities such as music to either bolster or undermine emancipatory political activity from below.

Research themes include music and the arts, labour, political economy of culture, and international/national liberation movements.

Within these areas, I have written a lot about electronic dance dance music and DJ cultures, gender, and most recently the reactionary uses of psychedelic trance and other musical subcultures in settler-colonial contexts.

I am currently writing about workers choirs, focusing on living case studies mostly from the Australian and Canadian states.

I am also developing an archival research project about Irish musical solidarity with Palestine.

I have supervised PhD projects in and across the areas of popular music studies, musicology, ethnomusicology, critical theory, cultural studies, sociology of culture, and gender/feminist studies.

I am available for supervision.
