RESEARCH INTERESTS

Current research focuses on developing sustainable, low-cost, and scalable nanomaterials to decarbonise the energy sector. It combines green synthesis with advanced in situ and operando characterisation, including synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering, and operando infrared spectroscopy, to establish structure–property–performance relationships. Supported by reactor design and process optimisation, the research targets two strategic applications: (i) large-scale thermochemical energy storage using industrial waste streams and (ii) cost-effective and sustainable green hydrogen production via water, wastewater, and seawater electrolysis.

The first research strand addresses long-duration energy storage, a key barrier to large-scale renewable energy deployment. Nanomaterial additives are engineered to enhance the efficiency, durability, and cycling stability of high-temperature thermochemical storage materials such as limestone, enabling commercially viable long-term storage solutions. Derived from industrial waste, these circular systems reduce cost and environmental impact while enabling continuous electricity generation when integrated with technologies such as concentrated solar power.

The second research strand develops next-generation electrocatalysts for sustainable green hydrogen production. Focusing on non-precious metal borides synthesised via simple, scalable, and green routes, the research delivers high electrocatalytic activity and long-term durability in challenging environments, including wastewater and seawater. This approach supports the large-scale deployment of affordable and sustainable hydrogen technologies.
