BIO

I graduated with a first-class honours B.E. (Civil) degree in 2011, winning the Roughan and O’Donovan prize for my research thesis. I was awarded a PhD in 2014 for my work on exploring the use of Instrumented Vehicles for Drive-by Damage Detection in Bridges. This research was funded by US-Ireland NSF-SFI partnership funding, with partners in Queens University Belfast and the University of Alabama. Following this, I was initially employed as a Bridge Engineer in Arup Dublin where I designed bridges for the new M17-M18 motorway in the west of Ireland. I then transferred to the Arup Computational Fluid Dynamics team where I worked on many national and international projects in the areas of wind modelling, fire and smoke modelling, and thermal performance modelling. I am a chartered engineer with Engineers Ireland (2016). I returned to academia in 2017 an was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering in UCD. My research interests focus on the use of computational fluid dynamics methods for the built environment, including wind modelling, fire and smoke modelling, and thermal modelling. My teaching interests focus on building working relationships between engineers and architects. I teach three modules on structures to mixed groups of engineers and architects in the first, second- and third-year undergraduate program. I was appointed as the Head of Teaching and Learning for Civil Engineering in 2018 and have completed a Professional Diploma in University Teaching and Learning at UCD. I am always happy to meet with students who wish to pursue funding for a PhD or a research masters programme. Likewise, prospective undergraduates who wish to propose their own final year projects are always welcome to get in touch. If you are interested in funding, the following are open calls and I am happy to discuss further: Irish Research Council Postgraduate: http://research.ie/funding-category/postgraduate/ Irish Research Council Postdoctoral: http://research.ie/funding-category/postdoctoral/ NUI Postdoctoral & Doctoral Scholarship: http://www.nui.ie/awards/post_doctoral_fellowships.asp#Sciences China Scholarship Council: https://www.ucd.ie/graduatestudies/feesfundingandscholarships/scholarships/chinascholarshipinformation/
