The European Commission uses the support provided by the European Social Policy Analysis Network (ESPAN) to inform its analysis of policies on social protection (such as pensions, long-term care, access to social protection for all types of activity status) and social inclusion (such as inequalities, active inclusion, child poverty and child well-being, access to essential services, homelessness, etc.) in the 27 EU Member States, (potential) candidate countries as well as Iceland and Norway. A team from the Geary Institute were appointed Irish coordinators of the ESPAN in 2023. This team includes Prof Michelle Norris, Dr Laura Foley, Dr Dorren McMahon and Ms Lucy O'Hard (UCD Geary Institute for Public Policy) and Dr Micheál Collins and Dr Stephan Köppe (UCD School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice), Dr Marie Pierce (Maynooth University, School of Applied Social Studies) and Dr Mel Cousins (Trinity College Dublin, School of Social Work and Social Policy). https://www.ucd.ie/geary/analysis/europeansocialpolicyanalysisnetwork/

Chair of Launch Event - Tax & Social Policy Research Group Co-convenor and Chair of seminar on 'What is the role of taxation in social policy and what are some of the contemporary and future challenges in the field of tax and social policy?'

On the 31st January 2024, Social Justice Ireland hosted The Social Justice Movement–A Fifty Year View conference to mark the retirement of Dr Seán Healy and Sr Brigid Reynolds of Social Justice Ireland Contributions from: President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins; Olivia O’Leary, writer, broadcaster and journalist; Professor Michele Dillon, University of New Hampshire, USA; Tony Fahey, Professor Emeritus of Social Policy in University College Dublin; Mick Clifford, author, investigative journalist and columnist; Dr Micheál L. Collins, economist and Assistant Professor of Social Policy at UCD; Dr Catherine Kavanagh, Lecturer in Economics at UCC; and Dermot McCarthy, retired public servant.

Input, based on past research, to ESRI hosted expert roundtable on the measurement of poverty in Ireland.

The event brought together those with research and administrative expertise on tax expenditure issues, including myself, with the objective of exploring the direction of future research in this area. Attendees included researchers from UCD, Trinity College Dublin, the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), the Nevin Economic Research Institute (NERI), the Council on Economic Policies - Zurich, the National Economic and Social Council (NESC), TASC – Thinktank for Action on Social Change, the Parliamentary Budget Office, the Department of Finance, and the Revenue Commissioners.
