Holistic Approach in Primary care for PreventIng Memory Impairment aNd Dementia (HAPPI MIND)
    National Health and Medical Research Council1 Aug 2019 - 31 Jul 2024
The aim is to implement a general practice-based holistic dementia risk assessment and health promotion program suitable for all Australians and evaluate its cost effectiveness. It is hypothesised that a general practice-based dementia risk assessment to create awareness and a tailored health promotion programme based on COM-B model, comprising self-management training, practical behaviour change techniques and GP/practice-nurse-coordinated interdisciplinary management of risk factors will lead to reduced dementia risk, compared to dementia risk assessment alone and usual care. A cluster randomised controlled trial (cRCT) will be carried out in 40 general practice clinics across New South Wales and Victoria. Community dwelling adults aged 45 years – 65 years with two or more risk factors for cognitive impairment will be recruited from each clinic to give a total of 600 participants. Change in risk factors for dementia measured using the Australian National University Alzheimer’s Disease Risk Index (ANU-ADRI) at 3 years will be the primary outcome. ANU- ADRI is an evidence-based, validated tool aimed at assessing individual exposure to risk factors known to be associated with an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease in late-life. The intervention will be implemented, evaluated and reported according to the Medical Research Council Framework for the Development and Evaluation of RCTs for Complex Interventions to Improve Health.
