RESEARCH INTERESTS
In detail, Eoghan's research interests include:
(1) Mechanics and kinematics of structures that form during gravity-driven deformation (e.g. sinkhole collapse, caldera subsidence, pit crater collapse, mining subsidence, volcano-flank instability, etc).
(2) Structural evolution of volcanic edifices, sub-volcanic intrusions and lava domes.
(3) Influence of regional tectonic regimes and associated structures on the development of volcanoes.
(4) Structural, sedimentological, and volcanological evolution of the British and Irish Palaeogene Igneous Province.
(5) Morphometric analysis and development of karst depressions.
(6) Ground motions and hydrogeological processes at peatlands.
Methods used to investigate these topics include:
- Geological mapping and field studies,
- Satellite and drone-based Earth observation,
- Scaled physical (analogue) experiments, and
- Discrete element method (DEM) numerical models.
To advance his research, Eoghan collaborates (or has collaborated) with other scientists in Austria, Britain, Belgium, Canada, France, Ireland, Iceland, Germany, Jordan, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, the UK and the USA.
